The city of Bridgeport teamed up with local businesses Tuesday for a helmet giveaway to keep kids safe during bike riding season.
The Sound Tigers and other corporate sponsors donated over 1,000 bike helmets to Bridgeport children as part of the "Heads Up For Safety" program.
Bridgeport Police Chief A.J. Perez says patrol officers will help get the helmets into the hands of kids who need them.
"Our officers are going to be riding around, anytime they spot a bike rider without a helmet they're going to be issuing a ticket," he says. "The ticket is a coupon, so they can go to Trantolo and Trantolo and redeem it for one of them."
Police say they're also going to issue tickets to a Sound Tigers hockey game to kids they see already wearing helmets.
The event also included a bike race.
