The city's public advocate joined lawmakers Wednesday to introduce legislation aimed at cracking down on illegal car window tints.
Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum and several lawmakers said the bill would strengthen existing state laws dealing with rear car window tints. The measure would also increase penalties for shops that install illegal tints.
Violators would face a $250 fine, which would go toward increasing police safety.
The push comes after Officers Herman Yan and Russel Timoshenko were shot several times last month after stopping a stolen SUV with dark tint in Brooklyn. While Yan survived his injuries, Timoshenko died from injuries to his face.
Bill supporters argue dark window tints force police officers to blindly walk into life-threatening situations.
