Government officials honored a Bridgeport woman for her lifetime of contributions to the civil rights movement Sunday.
Rev. Mary McBride-Lee, now a city council member in Bridgeport, participated in the historic march in Selma, Alabama, in 1965, Sen. Richard Blumenthal said.
President Barack Obama spoke in Selma Saturday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when peaceful demonstrators were beaten by police as they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma.
Blumenthal said he will recommend McBride-Lee for a replica of the Congressional Gold Medal honoring her participation in the original march.
"I feel like I took part in something that didn't just help the African American community, but people at large all over the place," McBridge-Lee said.
She also took part in the march on Washington led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
