A judge has ruled that Bridgeport's selection of the assistant police chief violated the city charter.
The court ruling says the city of Bridgeport did not follow procedure when it promoted Rebeca Garcia to the position.
In a 10-page ruling, the judge found the city's choice of Rebeca Garcia was in violation of civil service rules and the city charter when former chief AJ Perez — who's now behind bars — chose her to fill that spot.
The big question now is whether Garcia can remain in her position as acting chief.
Supporters of the police captains who brought the suit forward say they will have "to seek an additional court order with teeth that actually provides relief"
The city attorney issued a statement today saying, "The Assistant Chief was appointed from among a group of qualified candidates, as the Bridgeport Charter does not identify specific criteria or procedure for making these types of non-competitive appointments. We respectfully disagree with the court's decision."
