Bridgeport City Councilwoman Jeanette Herron is calling on the state to help the city keep warming centers open nonstop during cold weather, even when the state is not under a cold weather emergency.
"We have warming centers, we have shelters, but there is not enough money to facilitate them. We've had agencies speak up in Hartford, and I give them kudos because we are 10% short on the funds for all the homeless initiatives here. There is a surplus up in Hartford and I'm calling out our legislators and the governor to give us the money we need to open up the shelters so these people will not freeze to death on the street," Herron stressed on Sunday.
Herron thanked State Rep. Antonio Filipe, of Bridgeport, for working to secure such funding, saying it's "mission critical."
