Bridgeport's once-infamous dumping site known as "Mount Trashmore" is nearly ready for new development, city leaders announced at a news conference Tuesday.

During the 1980s and early '90s, neighbors described garbage piled 3 stories high, with rats running around and a pervasive stench. The mountain of garbage was taken down in the early '90s, but the site stood vacant for years.

Bridgeport leaders say the city and state together paid for the roughly $1 million cleanup.

The full cleanup is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Mayor Joe Ganim says the city will begin taking proposals in the fall. One idea is to build senior housing.
