Bridgeport School Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery ate lunch in the cafeteria at Geraldine Claytor Magnate Academy in Black Rock Tuesday.

"I'm here to spread the word and to celebrate this amazing program we're offering to all Bridgeport residents who are 18 years of age and younger," Avery told News 12.

"They don't have to register, and they don't have to attend Bridgeport Public Schools. This is a free program for all Bridgeport kids, and we are so proud to offer it to our community," Avery said.

"The free meals will be available at 17 sites across the city, thanks to previously allocated federal dollars that we already have in hand," Avery said.

Avery also pointed out that the federal government cannot rescind the funding now amid historic cuts to social programs.
