The city of Bridgeport held a vigil Friday to celebrate the life of Tyre Nichols.
Mayor Joe Ganim joined the Bridgeport Police Department for the ceremony at the Police Memorial Plaza.
Nichols died days after being brutally attacked by five Memphis police officers during an arrest last month.
Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter condemned the actions of those officers and emphasized his own officers' vows to protect the people.
"We have challenges in law enforcement. We have challenges in the Bridgeport Police Department, and we are taking and dealing with them head on. That's why we came here today, to show honor for Mr. Nichols and if his family can hear us from Bridgeport or if they can be touched by what we're doing here today, I hope that brings them a level of comfort," said Porter.
In honor of Nichols, Chief Porter promised to make the police department a more transparent and inviting service to the city.
