Bridgeport police say that Saturday's officer-involved shooting was not the first time they have had to respond to a call at that address or the first time the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Huntley Jackson, has attacked them.
Bridgeport Chief of Police Roderick Porter says this most recent incident started with a call because Jackson was refusing to take his medication, and was having what was described as "an emotional or mental health crisis."
Body camera footage released by the state shows officers attempting to talk to him and open the door, before he attacked one officer with a knife, stabbing them the shoulder, neck and head.
One officer opened fire in response, hitting Jackson in the torso.
"From my perspective, my officers acted professionally, and they acted according to their training, and they showed due care in this situation, not only for the suspect, but for his family as well," said Porter.
Back in December 2022, police say Jackson also attacked both medical responders and police who were trying to help him while responding to a call at the same address. He was arrested then as well.
Neighbors told News 12 both on and off camera they were surprised by the news, since the people in that house seem to keep to themselves.
"Honestly, I've never really seen anybody come, I've seen cars mostly but, not knowing who they are. No conversation, no interaction, whatsoever," said Sophia Miller, who has lived down the road for two years.
While Bridgeport does have a special team specifically to respond to mental health incidents, officials say it was not used here.
"This is a situation where I don't think that necessarily would have been effective. I just think this person was at a point where it was going to involve some sort of police actions or interventions," says Porter.
Porter says that the officer is now out of the hospital and expected to be OK, and is in critical condition.
"My prayers are with (Jackson's family,)" said Porter. "This is obviously a very tragic and emotional situation."
The officer who fired their gun is currently on administrative status, which is standard protocol, while the other two who were there are out on sick leave.
