The official kickoff to summer took place at Orchard Beach, with an annual fireworks extravaganza.

The event is hosted by the Bronx Borough President's Office in partnership with the Bronx Tourism Council and other sponsors.

Despite the cloudy sky and a breeze, people packed onto the beach and boardwalk to enjoy the live music, entertainment and a free fireworks display.

The event is an early Independence Day celebration, celebrating the end to the public-school year and the start of summer vacation.

"It's a tradition. It’s where you come dance, come eat, you just come to have a great time, it’s like little Puerto Rico,” said Olga Fernandez.

The borough president's office announced the return of the Summer Concert Series that begins on July 5 at the Bronx Night Market in Fordham Plaza, the series will return to Orchard Beach on July 13 for the remainder of the summer.
