Trinidadian-American actress Natalie Venetia Belcon is marking a career milestone – her first Tony Award nomination - for her role in Broadway’s "Buena Vista Social Club."
Belcon, who plays Omara in the musical adaptation, says the production’s themes of music, culture and family echoes her own roots.
"I'm over the moon. I am so happy. I'm proud of myself,” says Belcon. “It hit me the other day, I'm proud of myself."
The musical draws on the legendary Cuban music group, Buena Vista Social Club, whose 1997 album became an international sensation.
It was her parents, who were both musicians, who introduced her to the group's music.
“It would mean absolutely everything,” says Belcon about the possible win. “I know my mother will be watching.”
The Tony Awards ceremony is Sunday, June 16.
