The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations Sunday called for a hate crime investigation into anti-Muslim harassment incident that happened Saturday in Stamford.

They say the incident happened outside of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York on Washington Boulevard.

CAIR-CT posted a video on their Facebook page which they say shows a man who stopped his vehicle and shouted anti-Muslim slurs and insults at families, including children, who were leaving prayer.

The organization is calling for local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate and increase patrols around local mosques to ensure the safety for worshipers.

"This was a deliberate and targeted verbal assault meant to intimidate Muslim families, including children, as they peacefully left their house of worship. We call on law enforcement authorities to take this incident seriously and to send the message that hate and bias-motivated harassment have no place in Connecticut," said CAIR-CT Chairman Farhan Memon.

The organization urges people to remain vigilant and report any bias incidents to law enforcement and through their website.

Stamford police say the department is aware of the incident and is looking into the complaint.
