A cancer survivor from Norwalk will be participating this coming weekend in the 38th annual Swim Across the Sound – a 15.5-mile swim marathon from Port Jefferson, New York, to Bridgeport aimed at raising funds for cancer patients and their families.
Chris Calby was diagnosed with bone cancer 20 years ago. His treatments ended a year later and he is cancer free. He says swimming has eased his burdens.
"Swimming has been a large part of my recovery of my survivorship from cancer but also, I've dealt with alcohol and addiction issues since then," said Calby.
The event can take up to 10 hours to complete. Participants can swim, donate or volunteer to support this meaningful cause.
"As cancer treatment gets better and better there are more and more survivors, which is fantastic – and we really need to understand how to treat that group of people," said Calby.
"He lives the cause that he's trying to promote. He helps other people and that is something that's very lacking in the world," said Randy Christophersen from Westport.
The event has already raised over $300,000.
