(AP) - New York Cardinal Edward Egan has been released from the hospital where he was being treated for stomach pain.
Archdiocese spokesman Joe Zwilling says Egan's pain has subsided enough that he was able to go home Tuesday.
The face of U.S. Roman Catholicism was taken Saturday to the hospital, where doctors then discovered a heart condition. Zwilling says Egan will have a pacemaker installed at some point. Doctors have determined that it is not an emergency.
It's not clear whether Egan will be able to celebrate any of the Holy Week masses at St. Patrick's this week.
The 77-year-old cardinal is retiring April 15. He'll be succeeded by Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan.
