A Centerport woman pleaded not guilty Friday to multiple charges in a wrong-way Southern State Parkway crash that left her 9-year-old son dead.
Prosecutors said in court that 32-year-old Kerri Bedrick admitted to taking methamphetamine at 8 p.m. Wednesday, hours before the crash. They also said Bedrick was driving with a suspended license and had 56 previous license suspensions.
The judge in the courtroom said it was the most tragic case he's ever been involved with in 39 years.
New York state troopers say it was Suffolk County Sheriff's Office patrol that first spotted Kerri Bedrick driving the wrong way down Carleton Avenue around 2 a.m. Thursday. She allegedly ignored the lights and sirens officers had put on to try and get her to stop the car she was in.
Bedrick drove another 5 miles, ending up driving west in the eastbound lanes of the Southern State Parkway. New York state troopers say she eventually caused a crash involving four other vehicles.
Bedrick's 9-year-old son Eli Henrys was found in the back seat. Attempts were made by first responders to save his life, but he succumbed to his injuries. Troopers say he was wearing his seatbelt.
Drivers in other vehicles involved sustained minor injuries.
Bedrick's bail is set at $1 million. Her next appearance is scheduled for Aug. 26.
