The Fairfield Jewish community came together Sunday to gift a Labrador Retriever to the police department's K-9 Unit.
The Chabad of Fairfield also gifted the department $20,000.
Officers said the funds will go to caring for and training the dogs, as well as managing veterinarian bills.
"It's not just, 'oh let's acquire their first dog,' but it's also the ongoing training, the feeding, and the medicine. All that comes from the residents' donations. So let's make this the most incredible, the strongest and the best unit, not only in the state, but in the country," said Alex Leykikh, a member of the Chabad.
The new K-9 will be trained in narcotics detection and search and rescue.
Officers say they are extremely thankful for the donation.
