Democratic lawmakers held a session Wednesday to discuss the economic plan released by Gov. M. Jodi Rell to decrease the hulking budget deficit.

According to the new proposal, some $62 million will be transferred from funds and special accounts to the general state fund. It will add nearly $14 million in unclaimed bottle deposits and cut $35 million from a home heating assistance program.

In total, the democrats? plan will reduce the deficit by $131 million. Republicans, however, say it is insufficient.

?We're very disappointed that the Democrats have failed to meet even the governor's bottom line in terms of a deficit mitigation plan,? says Senate Minority Leader John McKinney (R).

Rell and the Legislature have already taken steps to decrease the deficit by about $460 million through cuts, additional federal aid and other budget balancing steps.

However, the deficit still stands at about $343 million for 2009, and it is expected to grow once the most recent tax numbers are calculated.
