A construction worker using a gasoline-powered saw was killed Thursday morning while working at Sikorsky Airport in Stratford, prompting a shutdown as other workers repaired the water suppression system.
The worker, whose identity has not yet been released, was cutting a water main at around 8:30 a.m. when the saw kicked back and hit his neck, killing him, according to police.
City officials described the worker as an employee of Manafort Brothers, a construction company based in Plainville.
"These are not simple and easy jobs," said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. "These are difficult jobs requiring a lot of strength and dexterity."
The work was part of one of several improvement projects at the airport aimed at enhancing runway safety, according to officials.
Local police, fire departments and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident.
