The Plan B emergency contraception bill overwhelming passed in the House of Representatives Wednesday, despite concern from Catholic leaders across southwestern Connecticut. The bill requires all Connecticut hospitals, including Catholic institutions, to provide the emergency contraception pill to rape victims. Many Catholics argue the bill interferes with their religious beliefs. The legislature has been trying to work out an agreement that the Connecticut Catholic Conference can support. The current bill includes a compromise that would allow a third party medical professional to counsel the victim about options and then dispense the Plan B pill.Governor Jodi Rell (R-CT) has not said whether she will sign the bill. She hopes a compromise can be reached in order to provide an option to rape victims.
