Police in Bridgeport raised and donated $67,000 to help a fellow cop deal with mounting medical costs.
Officer Hector Melecio has been fighting brain cancer for about three years. However, the officer's insurance does not cover the high cost of an experimental treatment to fight the illness. Melecio plans to use the donated money to help pay for the new treatment at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Fellow cops from Melecio's department cashed in paid vacation days to help with his medical costs. They are also holding a charity basketball game versus New Haven's department.
"This is a small department in Bridgeport, but when we have a problem, we come together," said Melecio.
