A pair of Long Island sisters is using time in isolation to give back amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Marissa and Juliana say they realized they could use their knack for arts and crafts for the greater good. They are making bracelets dubbed "Corona Cuffs" to raise COVID-19 relief funds.
Originally the girls planned to make bracelets for their friends and family, but the response has amazed even them. They sold 20 almost immediately, and after their first weekend, the two raised over $2,000 for the cause.
"Our mom said, 'You guys could probably hit $10,000,' and we were like no way -- and now we're pretty close to hitting $10,000 in two weeks!" one of the sisters tells News 12. "It's like, really awesome."
They ask for a $7 donation per bracelet, and they say some people donate more. All of the profits are being donated to Direct Relief. Juliana, who is studying to be a nurse, says she researched Direct Relief before selecting them to make sure every dime would be accounted for.
One order for bracelets came from a friend of the girls who is a nurse at LIJ. She ordered 40 bracelets for health care workers, and said that they’ve been a great morale booster.
The sisters say the best part of the whole operation is that they get to do it all together.
