The Connecticut Hammerheads professional lacrosse team saw its inaugural season cut short due to the pandemic.
The team says they were on target to reach all their goals last week, before their shortened season was made even shorter.
Major League Lacrosse held a shortened five-game preseason last week ahead of a four-team playoff planned for the weekend.
The Hammerheads entered the playoff as the No. 2 seed, set to take on the champion Chesapeake Bayhawks. But after several league players tested positive for coronavirus, both the Bayhawks and Hammerheads chose to forfeit the match and go home.
The team's physician says players and coaches decided to put community health and safety before their athletic dreams.
The Boston Cannons defeated the Denver Outlaws 13-10 on Sunday to take home the coveted Steinfeld Trophy.
The Hammerheads say they're coming back for the crown next year. Rafferty Stadium at Fairfield University will be the home for the Hammerheads for the 2021 season.
