Crews prepare for Sunday’s heavy wind and rain on Long Island

PSEG Long Island crews and local municipalities spent Saturday preparing for heavy wind and rain that will soon be bearing down on the region.

Tree trimmers contracted by the utility cut down weak limbs and branches in Port Washington to prevent them from falling during the storm and knocking out power lines.

In the Town of Hempstead, crews made sure storm drains were clear to prevent flooding on local roadways.

Officials are asking residents to take the proper precautions before the storm.

“Secure any loose items around your homes. Specifically remember those Halloween decorations that may be out. We certainly don’t want those flying throughout the neighborhoods – garbage pails or anything else that’s loose," said Hempstead Town Supervisor John Ferretti.

"There will be wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour, and there will be continuous winds of around 30 miles an hour that are projected right now. We expect there to be minor to moderate coastal flooding," said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.

Officials say make sure phones are charged and flashlights have extra batteries in the event of a power outage.
