Aquarion says one of the water main breaks has been repaired. Crews are still waiting for a part needed to repair the second break. Most of Stratford, as well as Trumbull and Shelton, now have water service restored.
Emergency crews have been working for hours to repair two water main breaks that flooded Huntington Road near the Merritt Parkway and began affecting the north end of Stratford on Tuesday afternoon.
The breaks caused a traffic nightmare and left customers in parts of Trumbull and Shelton with discolored water, too.
Stratford Mayor David Chess said about half of Stratford was initially without water, but thanks to the quick response from emergency crews, Aquarion Water Authority says that number was down to about 50 homes as of 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Director of community relations George Logan said Huntington Road will remain closed to through traffic until at least Wednesday afternoon as crews work to repair the road.
“We need to make sure we understand the extent of that sinkhole, how much soil and sediment underneath the road has actually been washed out,” said George Logan, Aquarion director of community relations.
Aquarion Water Company expects those repairs to wrap at around 8 this morning.
Once water service is restored, some customers may notice cloudy water. Officials said running cold water for several minutes should clear it.
