Residents at a Crown Heights apartment building say they are dealing with an ongoing pest problem that has made daily life uncomfortable. They claim rats and roaches are spreading throughout the property.

Residents at 1245 Eastern Parkway say rat sightings have become a regular occurrence, with some claiming the rodents are unusually large and appear throughout the building at all hours.

"There's like a wave - it looks like a wave of rats; either daytime or nighttime. Nighttime is usually a lot more," resident Manny said.

Neighbors say the issue extends beyond rodents, claiming roaches have also become a major problem inside apartments and common areas.

"I'm seeing a lot of rats and roaches in the building. You're out into the apartments. It's uncontrolled. It's got to be from the landlord in order to pick up the slugs and try to get the restrictions out of the building," resident Lenny Hamilton said.

Residents point to 61 open Housing Preservation & Development violations at the building, citing issues including roach infestations, hot water problems, and rat sightings. They say repeated complaints about extermination efforts have not led to a lasting solution.

"I have complained about missed exterminations; there's always a place for them to live and to eat. They will remain until people change some of the behaviors, including the staff," resident Valerie said.

Valerie says addressing the problem will require continued effort from everyone involved.

"I know people are busy, but if I do a little bit and someone else do a little bit, it'll get done. We got to keep monitoring and keep pushing," she said.

Residents say they are now planning a building-wide meeting to discuss their next steps and push for answers.

News 12 reached out to building management for comment but has not yet heard back.
