Connecticut Republicans have picked their candidate for governor during the state GOP convention at Foxwoods Resort.

Mark Boughton, the mayor of Danbury, was able to edge out surprisingly strong competition from Trumbull First Selctman Tim Herbst and Westport businessman Steve Obsitnik. Both got enough support to force an August primary vote.

Boughton told News 12 earlier in the day that it's crucial for Republicans to have one endorsed candidate as they try to take back the governor's office this fall.

“I think it's very important. Look, I don't think all these people drove two hours, three hours, to sit up here and not have a nominee when we're done," said Boughton.

News 12 reporter John Craven was on the floor of the convention all day. He says things got so raucous at one point that officials had to clear the room of everyone, except delegates.

Voters will get the final say in August during the primary, but Boughton has gained a considerable advantage with Saturday’s win.

Also at the convention, state Sen. Joe Markley won the GOP endorsement for lieutenant governor, beating back a challenge from New Britain mayor Erin Stewart and Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson. Both will challenge him in the August primary.
