A Darien school resource officer is offering insight into how he makes students feel comfortable with his presence.

Darien High School has had an SRO for seven years. Bryan Wallman has held the position for the last two years.

Wallman says the most crucial thing for new SROs to do is build a relationship with the kids so that they are seen as someone who is there to help.

He says this is important because he sees how he could be seen as intimidating to some.

"I do completely understand that, and I respect that completely," says Wallman. "I try to convey to them how I'm a fully trained police officer. None of my tools that I use at work are left laying around anywhere, they're always with me.”

He says one should take the job seriously, but also not take yourself too seriously.

Wallman says he thinks about what he found most important when he was a teen to understand the age group now.

News 12 was in Darien back in 2011 when the position first began. In the years following, school safety became even more of a nationwide concern, leading to many other schools adding SROs.
