DEEP predicts peak fall foliage for 2019 season
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has revealed its prediction for peak fall foliage in Connecticut for the 2019 season.
According to DEEP, the foliage season begins in late September and extends through early November. Peak color is estimated to begin between Oct. 5 and Nov. 8. However, depending on the weather in the coming weeks, the DEEP says peak dates may be adjusted a few days earlier or later as the season progresses.
Fall colors will begin to appear first in Litchfield County between Sept. 21-25, according to DEEP officials.
Connecticut's state tourism website, visitct.com, recommends scenic drives as the best way to view Connecticut's fall foliage.
Litchfield Hills Ramble is a 100-mile route that begins in Torrington and runs through Route 8 to Winsted. The northwest route can be used to see the state's first leaves change color. Estimated peak viewing for Litchfield Hills Ramble runs from Sept. 26 through Oct. 15.
To see the best leaves in lower Fairfield County, Connecticut's tourism website recommends a 115-mile scenic route that begins on the Merritt Parkway in Norwalk and runs through I-84  up through Litchfield County. The best time to view peak fall colors on this route will be from Oct. 16-30.
According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, leaves change color because of the amount of daylight and photosynthesis not the weather.
