State Democrats were on a last-minute push Thursday, hoping Gov. Jodi Rell (R-CT) would sign a bonding package she has said she would veto.

The General Assembly passed the two-year, $4.6 billion package of bonding initiatives last week. The next day, Rell announced she plans to veto the package saying the state cannot afford it.

The bill would give millions of dollars to communities in southwestern Connecticut. State Rep. Chris Perrone (D-Norwalk) says included in the bond package is more than $3 million to help redesign Norwalk?s infrastructure. Residents say each time it rains, homes and streets are flooded. Perrone says that money is critical to help save the neighborhood.

Also tied up in the bonding package is money for school construction projects. A special legislative session was held Wednesday to vote on just that part of the bonding package. However, lawmakers say nothing was resolved in the meeting.

The governor was expected to receive the bill Thursday. Rell says she will present a compromise package to members of the General Assembly on Monday.
