Derby man Luis Barrios faces deportation to Guatemala for missed meeting 20 years ago
A Derby man is running out of time as he battles a deportation order from the Trump administration stemming from a missed meeting two decades ago.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal met Friday with Luis Barrios, two days after the Democratic senator helped win an emergency 30-day reprieve.
"We've heard from a growing number of people in exactly this situation because of the change in the administration policy that now causes deportation of people who have never broken the law, have no criminal record," Blumenthal said.
Barrios came to the United States illegally 25 years from Guatemala, where his father and brother have since been murdered. He missed an asylum hearing almost 20 years ago but since 2011 has been granted one-year extensions.
About 100 supporters protested the deportation order outside the federal building in Hartford Tuesday. Police arrested 19 of them.
His lawyer says Barrios has had a valid claim for asylum in the United States since 1993. He says it's up to immigration authorities or a federal judge to reopen his case.
