A disabled Bridgeport man says he is no longer a prisoner in his own apartment after News 12 aired his story last week.

James Freeman is a paraplegic who lives on the fifth floor of a nine-story building on Golden Hill Street. It is home to hundreds of seniors and disabled residents like him.

The 58-year-old says the one elevator in the complex, which was broken for a month, has finally been repaired thanks to News 12's story.

News 12 Connecticut reported the broken elevator to Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who filed a complaint with federal housing officials.

"We would like to thank News 12, Sen. Blumenthal, persons involved through the HUD agencies who helped to finally bring this situation to resolution, to help make sure that this elevator was repaired, to bring safety back to the residents at 144 Golden Hill St. who are now able finally to get in and out of their building safely," says Freeman's lawyer Kimberly Wood.

The property manager apologized for the broken elevator.

Housing officials say the owner will be penalized for the month-long elevator outage.
