Dermatologists say residents fearful of skin cancer can?t afford a nasty summer sunburn.
Dr. Robin Oshman recommends residents use sunscreen while outdoors to stay protected. She says sun block that contains Mexoryl or Parsol is best, and brands that contain Parsol titanium or zinc also work.
She says the sun can have a variety of effects on the skin, such as old age spots and wrinkles. The most dangerous is skin cancer.
A Swedish study recently confirmed that clothing is an even better barrier to the sun. Dr. Oshman agrees, and says it is always important to cover up with clothing even when going to the beach. She recommends wearing a tightly woven cotton shirt, jeans and a hat.
Free skin cancer screenings will be held May 6 at the Westport/Weston Health District from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
