A volunteer committee called the Dog Poop Initiative has a unique way to fight what they say is a public health risk and just gross.

Folks in New Canaan say they love everything about Irwin Park – except for the dog dirt.

The Dog Poop Initiative is putting flags up at the park in piles of poop left behind to shame negligent dog walkers.

Some parkgoers say it’s already made a difference, though others think a stronger deterrent like fines may be needed.

The town does provide waste bags for dog owners in a dispenser at the head of the walking trail. New Canaan Parks and Recreation says if the initiative works they may try it elsewhere.
