A devastating earthquake struck western Colombia Monday, killing hundreds of people and leaving communities facing widespread destruction and a difficult recovery.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake caused buildings to collapse and left many families without homes, power and other basic necessities. Rescue and cleanup efforts are underway as crews continue searching through the rubble and assessing the damage.

The disaster is also hitting close to home for many people in New Jersey with family and loved ones in Colombia.

In Elizabeth, the Colombian community is stepping up to help.

A donation drive is underway at La Kantina Restaurant, where residents are bringing rice, pasta, canned food, diapers, water and other essential items for families affected by the earthquake.

Organizers say rescue tools, including shovels and flashlights, are also needed.

Alejandro Jimenez organized the drive after seeing the need for help in his home country.

“We wanted to help them, so we created this,” Jimenez said. “We are receiving donations from people around the city.”

Volunteers spent Wednesday sorting and packing donations. Even children came out to lend a helping hand.

"It hurts to just not be there and be able to help more," volunteer Steven Morales said. "And so, this is the equivalent to what I think would be most ideal in my way to contribute and help the people of Colombia."

Organizers say the donations collected in Elizabeth are expected to be sent to Colombia on Thursday and arrive by next week.

Donations are being accepted until Wednesday night at La Kantina Restaurant in Elizabeth. A GoFundMe has also been created to support people impacted by the earthquake.
