Snowplow drivers worked tirelessly in Newtown Sunday to clear slush from the road and prevent ice from accumulating overnight.
Officials warned that ice accumulation into the evening hours could lead to continued power outages.
By mid-morning, several hundred power outages had already been reported across the area.
The Department of Public Works has been working since yesterday to treat the roads in preparation for snow and ice.
The director of public works says the sand treatment should add some traction to the roads for the Monday morning commute, but he advises drivers to continue to be cautious.
