Former Rep. Chris Shays formally announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate this afternoon. Shays, a Republican who last represented the state's 4th District in 2009, filed his paperwork three months ago and has already opened a campaign office in Stratford. He plans on running to succeed retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT). Ex-World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon is also running for the open seat. She spent $50 million on her unsuccessful U.S. Senate run in 2010. Three other Republicans are vying for the position as well. The primary is Aug. 14.
