A beloved Fairfield resident who battled his third cancer diagnosis is finally back home after being in the hospital for almost a year.
The community gave 23-year-old Charlie Capalbo a big welcome celebration outside his home Friday.
Capalbo is in remission for the third time in five years. His family knew he was coming home a week in advance but once the community caught wind of the news, they hustled to put the surprise together for him.
The group started at Jennings Beach and quietly marched outside Capalbo's house where he was waiting on his front lawn.
Capalbo says the community has helped him get through the last five years.
"It's just a feeling you can't explain, especially after being gone for so long," said Capalbo.
"These people around him are part of why he's here today. I don't think he would be here today if he didn't have them," his mom Jennifer Capalbo said.
As much as this group of people helped Charlie Capalbo get through this difficult time, the community says Charlie's strength has inspired them year after year.
A Bridgeport Islanders player made a surprise visit to Capalbo's house to welcome him home.
