The Fairfield Police Commission unanimously selected Capt. Robert Kalamaras as the new chief of police Tuesday.
Kalamaras will replace Chris Lyddy, who is retiring Friday after 38 years on the force.
The three candidates who were in the running were Deputy Chief Donald Smith, Capt. Kalamaras and Capt. Christopher Tursi.
Kalamaras has been with the Fairfield Police Department since 2000 and has served in a number of roles. He is the current commander of the Field Services Bureau.
First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick must approve Kalamaras as the next chief.
