Police offered Halloween safety tips to Fairfield residents Friday.
They say parents should know the route their children will take while trick-or-treating beforehand.
An adult should accompany young children, they say, and older children should go in groups.
They also advise kids to use sidewalks when it's possible and to walk against the flow of traffic when it isn't.
Police also asked homeowners to clear their driveways and turn on their outside lights.
They also suggest all trick-or-treaters have a flash light or some type of reflective tape on them. Police also remind parents to inspect all of their children's candy before it's eaten.
And lastly, police say kids should never enter a stranger's house.
"No matter how much they invite you in or how friendly they may seem, do not go into the house," says Lt. James Perez of the Fairfield Police Department.
Police say they're stepping up patrols for Friday and Saturday evenings.
