Family says man accused in Stratford drive-by suffers from ‘mental illness’
A Stratford man who fled to Virginia was returned to Connecticut Tuesday to face charges stemming from a drive-by shooting earlier this month.
Police say David Williams was driving when he shot a man walking on Success Avenue by Bullard Court in Stratford. The shooting occurred on March 7.
Police say Williams knew the victim, but investigators are still trying to work out the motive.
The victim is still in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital.
According to court documents released after his arraignment, family members say he suffers from mental illness and extreme paranoia. Williams had been living with an uncle in the Stratford area after being stabbed and kicked out of his home in Bridgeport.
Police told News 12 that they were able to track Williams' car to a motel in Virginia earlier this month, where he eventually surrendered after a standoff with police that lasted several hours.
Williams faces several charges including attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a firearm. He was held on $500,000 bond.
