The famous crossword puzzle tournament that called Stamford home for more than two decades will soon move on. Since 1978, thousands of people have competed in the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. However, competitors from across the country and around the world solved puzzles for the last time in Stamford Sunday. Tournament founder and New York Times Crossword Puzzle Editor Will Shortz says the three-day competition gets bigger each year. A documentary was even made in 2005 about the well-known event called Wordplay, which was nominated for the 2006 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize. Shortz says the film helped attract new challengers to the game. ?Our attendance has gone up 45 percent. We have about 700 contestants this year." With hundreds more than years past, the Stamford Marriott can no longer host the competition, which is now moving to the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott in New York City. Two-time champion Tyler Hinman attended the event this year and secured a three-peat win. Hinman took home the title and a $5,000 prize.
