Thousands gathered at Moorland Farm Saturday for the 105th Far Hills Race Meeting, a longstanding New Jersey tradition that brings together horse racing fans, families and local vendors while raising money for health care organizations.

The annual event welcomed an estimated 30,000 to 35,000 people, according to Ron Kennedy, chairman of the Far Hills Race Meeting Association.

“The unique part is it’s 105 years. Not many institutions last that long,” Kennedy said. “It’s a great community event. We bring people back. It’s a reunion.”

The event features six steeplechase races and has become a gathering place for families and friends who return year after year. Some families have maintained the same tailgating spots for generations.

Kennedy said the tradition dates back to a time when the area was home to numerous horse farms, and it continues to attract people with ties to Somerset County and beyond.

The race meeting also has a charitable mission. The nonprofit organization has raised more than $22 million for regional health care providers and community organizations over the years.

“We have six beneficiaries. And we’re so proud and happy of the relationships that we have with them,” Kennedy said.

The beneficiaries include RWJ University Hospital Somerset and five smaller organizations serving communities near Far Hills. Kennedy said the funding can make a significant difference for smaller health care organizations.

Organizers are also expanding the event’s offerings to appeal to new audiences. The Hunt Club, an all-inclusive entertainment area featuring activities and a DJ, has grown since its introduction a few years ago.

Kennedy said the goal is to give attendees more ways to enjoy the event while preserving its longstanding traditions.

After 105 years, the Far Hills Race Meeting continues to bring generations together for a day of racing, community and charitable giving.
