The fate of the New Canaan Post Office building is up in the air now that a "for lease" sign has been posted on the building.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service told News 12 Connecticut that it has no plans to close the office, but the lease is from the 1980s and expires on Jan. 31, 2014.
Officials say they have assigned a local broker to renegotiate the lease, while residents and former First Selectman Jeb Walker agree that the post office should stay.
The owner of the property wouldn't comment today, but Walker says the landlord told the postal service years ago that he wants to turn the property into retail space.
