More than 250 people attended a meeting Wednesday to hear federal officials talk about their plans to deal with contaminated sites in Stratford.

Brake company Raymark Industries used asbestos and other hazardous materials in its production and left behind dozens of sites after it closed more than a decade ago. The Environmental Protection Agency says there is a lot of contaminated soil where businesses and homes stand that must be removed.

The agency?s officials say they are looking at 26 contaminated sites and that the federal government has $21 million to deal with the problem.

Although an exact plan is still in the works, the EPA?s working scenario is to move the contaminated soil to a former ballpark. However, residents say that would put them in danger.

A formal plan to remove the contaminated soil will be announced later this year. Public hearings will be held before any decisions are made.
