A fire destroyed a family home on University Avenue and sent five people to the hospital Saturday evening.

Fire crews responded to the home at 2736 University Ave. around 6:30 p.m. after the blaze started on the first floor, and quickly spread to the second.

Neighbors say the home is occupied by 10 to 15 family members.

Officials say one of the injured people was in serious condition.

The Red Cross was on the scene to help the displaced family members.

It was not immediately clear how the fire started.
