Firefighters are asking residents to take caution after a space heater was blamed for a fire that left 11 people homeless.
The fire occurred on Bouton Street Wednesday. An electric space heater was found in the home, but Norwalk fire officials did not confirm if that's what sparked the flames.
It was one of four fires reported in the area in a 24-hour period.
"This is the time of year that people are starting up their heaters, they are using alternate sources, they're lighting candles for the holidays," said Fairfield Assistant Chief Chris Tracy.
Tracy specializes in fire safety and trains firefighters throughout southwestern Connecticut. He suggests residents take extra time to make sure candles and heaters are being properly used.
Experts say space heaters should be used 3 feet away from any wall. They also say smoke detectors should be placed in every room of a home.
