Bridgeport fire officials said Friday that three of their own are being credited with rescuing an elderly woman from a burning home.
The fire happened Wednesday night in the city's Black Rock section on Bennett Street. Firefighters learned when they arrived on the scene that there was a 93-year-old woman still inside.
Firefighter Bobby Hernandez is one of the three credited with saving her, after he and a colleague found her on the second floor. He says another firefighter helped them get her outside safely as others worked to put the flames out.
Resident So Ta says the woman that was rescued is his aunt, Anh Ta. He says his 87-year-old father was also home at the time of the fire and was able to get out safely. Ta says both are recovering at Bridgeport Hospital.
Hernandez says that although he is being called a hero, he doesn't think of himself that way. He says he was just doing his job.
