The candidates for Fairfield first selectman met Monday for their third and final debate as the race enters the final stretch.

The Fairfield Rotary Club hosted the hourlong forum where incumbent Democrat Mike Tetreau and Republican challenger, state Rep. Brenda Kupchick, fielded questions ranging from economic development to natural disaster response.

The conversation turned fiery when the topic of the contaminated Public Works fill pile came up.

Kupchick blamed a lack of oversight for the scandal that left toxic materials in 10 public parks and led to corruption charges against two DPW employees.

Tetreau fired back that the levels in the parks are below unsafe levels, and accused his opponent of unnecessarily politicizing the issue.

Earlier this month, Tetreau and Kupchick squared off for a debate on Connecticut Power and Politics.
