Redding resident and folk music icon Mary Travers of the trio Peter, Paul and Mary passed away Wednesday. She was 72.
Travers died of complications from chemotherapy after a lengthy battle with leukemia.
Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey and Travers made it big in the 60s with songs such as "If I had a Hammer" and "Puff the Magic Dragon." The trio broke up in 1971, and Travers moved to Redding for a quieter life after pursuing a solo career.
Travers reunited the band for a benefit to raise funds for a new senior center in Redding. Community members say the building will now serve as a reminder of her legacy.
"We are very proud she called Redding home," says Redding First Selectman Natalie Ketcham.
