The attorney for a former Bridgeport police officer charged with staging a racially charged hoax at the department confirmed a judge has granted his client a special form of probation.
Prosecutors say Clive Higgins wrote letters in which he was portrayed as the target of racist remarks last February.
Those letters came soon after Higgins was acquitted of brutality in connection with the violent, videotaped arrest of a suspect for which two other officers pleaded guilty.
Higgins' attorney says the judge hearing the hoax case approved Higgins' application for the probation program that ends with charges being wiped from his record.
